The Monmouth County Prosecutor's Office is taking over an internal affairs investigation into the Asbury Park and Neptune police departments.
According to a statement by Acting Prosecutor Christopher Gramiccioni, the investigation will conduct a "review and evaluation of the performance of the responding officers to last week's tragic shooting by off-duty Neptune Police Officer Philip Seidle."
Seidle is accused of fatally shooting his ex-wife Tamara Seidle after he allegedly chased her several miles in his car. After the shooting, Seidle allegedly held the gun to his own head, which led to a 30-minute standoff with responding police. The whole incident unfolded in front of the couple's 7-year-old daughter.
Responding officers supposedly knew Seidle and did not resort to deadly force to stop him, a decision many witnesses on scene criticized.
The review by the Monmouth County prosecutor will look into whether the officers on scene followed proper protocol.
