Police are continuing to investigate a crash in Edison that killed a 36-year-old Irvington man and injured a Brooklyn, New York man just after midnight on Tuesday.
According to the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office, Makiano Francois, 36, of Irvington sustained fatal injuries as a result of the incident.
The two-vehicle crash occurred on Route 1 near Grandview Avenue Tuesday morning at approximately 12:07 a.m. In a statement Wednesday, the prosecutor said that when officers responded to the scene, they found two vehicles involved in the crash. One of the vehicles, a Ford Explorer, was occupied by a 48-year-old man from Brooklyn. The other car, a Mitsubishi, was being driven by Francois.
Following the crash, the driver of the Explorer was transported to Robert Woods Johnson University Hospital in New Brunswick where he was treated for minor injuries and later released. Francois was also transported to the hospital where he succumbed to his injuries, the prosecutor said.
The crash left debris scattered across the roadway early Tuesday morning. The vehicles were removed on flatbed trucks just before 5 a.m., just in time to avoid major disruptions during the morning commute.
The investigation is "active and continuing," authorities said, adding that as of now, no criminal charges have been filed. Anyone with information about the crash is asked to call Detective Alan Sciarrillo of the Edison Police Department at 732-248-7472 or Detective James Barnes of the Middlesex County Prosecutor's Office at 732-745-3437.
