Authorities say a Jersey City police officer shot and injured a knife-wielding man who allegedly refused to drop his weapon Friday evening.
It happened on Hopkins Avenue shortly after 6 p.m. The Hudson County prosecutor says Jersey City police responded to a report of an intoxicated person fighting. Responding officers arrived at the scene and encountered a man with a knife, according to a release from the prosecutor's office.
The prosecutor says the man "disregarded repeated requests by police to put his weapon down," and then allegedly lunged with the knife at officers after they deployed pepper spray.
One officer opened fire, striking the man, according to the prosecutor.
The man, whose identity has not been released, was taken to Jersey City Medical Center. He is facing charges of aggravated assault, possession of a weapon for unlawful purposes and unlawful possession of a weapon.
The Hudson County Prosecutor’s Office says it is investigating the circumstances surrounding the shooting in conjunction with the state Attorney General's Office, which has been notified of the officer-involved shooting under standard protocol.
