Prosecutor: 3 facing charges after 8-year-old fatally shoots himself in Newark
Three people are now facing charges after an 8-year-old boy got ahold of an unattended firearm and fatally shot himself.
The Essex County Prosecutor’s Office says that the shooting occurred Sunday night. Newark police officers were called to a home on the 100 block of Schuyler Avenue for reports of a child with a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
Officials say that the child, identified as Jahmeer Allen, was disabled and used a wheelchair. The boy apparently got ahold of the weapon, which allegedly belonged to his uncle.
Authorities say that three adults have been charged in relation to the incident. Those adults include 43-year-old Shaneefah Allen, the boy’s grandmother and legal guardian; 23-year-old Jahnaya Black, the victim’s aunt, and 18-year-old Marquis Wright, the victim’s uncle.
Officials say that Black was the only adult home at the time of the shooting.
Allen and Black have been charged with endangering the welfare of a child.
Wright was charged with unlawful possession of a weapon, endangering the welfare of a child and allowing a minor to have access to a loaded firearm.
