Three children are now safe after they were rescued by the Bergen County Regional SWAT team after their father killed their mother and then himself.
The Bergen County Prosecutor's Office confirms that Scott Sabia, 45, killed his wife Michelle, 44, outside their home on 505 Union St. Wednesday evening.
The SWAT team was called in after Sabia barricaded himself inside the home and refused to come out. Acting Prosecutor Gurbir Grewal says that Sabia then took his own life.
Both died from gunshot wounds.
Witnesses reported hearing loud noises coming from the home during the incident, which may have been flashbang grenades used by law enforcement officials.
The couple's three young children, ages 14, 11 and 9, were home at the time of the shooting. They were able to escape the house and fled to a neighbor's
Neighboring homes were evacuated during the standoff.
Michelle Sabia was a teacher at Washington School in Rutherford.
The superintendent and principal released a statement saying "We mourn the tragic loss of our colleague, teacher and friend Michele Sabia."
Counselors are being provided at the school for anyone affected by the tragedy.
It's unclear what led to the shooting.
