A group of Connecticut lawmakers has proposed a bill that would "institute mandatory voting" for all Connecticut residents and fine those who do not comply.
House bill 5704 would require all "qualified electors" either vote or provide a valid reason for not doing so.
It would also require election officials to track down every person who did not cast a ballot to determine if they had a valid reason and fine those who did not.
The bill says it's designed to "incentivize civic engagement."
