The state Senate voted Monday to crack down on political corruption in the Garden State.
No one in the Senate voted against a bill that takes away government pensions for elected officials convicted of corruption. According to Senator Ellen Karcher (D-12th District), politicians could lose their pensions and serve mandatory prison terms under the measure. Karcher, a sponsor of the bill, says it is time to put more teeth in the state?s ethics laws.
The bill still needs to clear the Assembly before the governor can consider signing it. If the bill becomes law, it would not apply to politicians who were already convicted.
