No official word has been announced, but after a meeting between the governor and legislators, it's not looking good for homeowners hoping for property tax rebates.
Legislative leaders are saying the state's fiscal problems have gotten so bad the goal should be only to protect rebates for seniors.
"Our goal with the rebates has to be to absolutely preserve them for senior citizens and do the best we can to provide the maximum relief possible to all other working families," says Assembly Speaker John Roberts.
Even the harshest critics of Gov. Corzine's proposal to possibly not give the rebates are now on the same page.
Assemblyman Lou Greenwald was quoted Wednesday as saying he would fight to the death to save the rebates, but said he was on board for what must be done after the meeting with Corzine.
"I think the governor is 100 percent right to have everything on the table," he says.
