It was a busy Monday for members of the New Jersey Assembly, with votes scheduled on everything from smoking in cars to property tax relief. The issue that got the most attention was the unpopular subject of property taxes. Last year, New Jersey residents said they favored an increase in sales tax. Now, there?s a plan to use the money from that sales tax increase for property tax relief and put the plan in the state constitution. The question would be put before voters in November. Many voters, however, said they think the money should be used for something else. ?No, I don't think it's a good idea,? Paula Kalinowski, of Chesterfield, said. It can be used for other things. How about health care? There are a lot of things it can be used for." Hamilton resident Cheryl Moncrief added, ?We just worry about whether it's going to be used right or if it's really going to the programs they say it will be." Despite the opinion among residents, legislators say the plan is a good idea. They passed the bill by a vote of 79 to 1.
