The visit would have come as Gov. Phil Murphy and the governors of New York and Connecticut announced that people traveling from areas where COVID-19 cases have spiked would have to quarantine for 14 days. The president recently traveled to one of those states.
"The president of the United States is not a civilian," White House spokesman Judd Deere said in a press statement to CNN. "Anyone who is in close proximity to him, including staff, guests, and press are tested for COVID-19 and confirmed to be negative."
Murphy said on Friday that the president would not have had to quarantine because he was "essential personnel."
Two weeks ago, Trump met with Murphy, hosted a fundraiser for his reelection committee and the Republican party, and marked his 74 birthday.
