New Jersey residents who are looking to get rid of their unwanted and unused prescription drugs will have the opportunity this weekend.

The Drug Enforcement Agency and local law enforcement departments are partnering for the 17th annual National Prescription Drug Take Back Day – an event held across the country.

“This is an opportunity for the public to play their part in combating the current prescription opioid epidemic,” says Susan Gibson, the special agent in charge of the DEA’s New Jersey division.

Officials say that a majority of prescription drug abusers say that they get their drugs from friends and family.

The initiative allows New Jersey residents to turn their prescription drugs into law enforcement officers to be safely disposed of.

The event takes place Saturday from 10 a.m. until 2 p.m.

New Jersey residents turned in more than 12,700 pounds of prescription medications last year, according to officials.
