Monday’s Powerball jackpot prize is worth an estimated $1.9 billion – the largest lottery prize ever offered.
No one has won the top Powerball prize for the last 40 drawings. The last winner was on Aug. 3. The odds of winning all five numbers and the Powerball are almost 1 in 300 million. And even if you beat those odds, you aren’t taking it all home with you.
Those who take the lump sum would get about $929 million. The IRS takes almost a quarter of the prize. New Jersey will also get a cut.
But for many New Jersey residents, a prize worth hundreds of millions of dollars is more than enough.
“I think I could survive on a billion dollars just fine,” says Valerie Phillips-Vlaskewicz, of Roselle Park.
“I won’t cook every meal every single day - I’ll get help in the kitchen,” says Ligia Miranda, of Cranford.
But even if you don’t win the jackpot, lottery players are still urged to check their tickets for smaller prizes.
