Power has been restored after a car crashed into a utility pole in New Brunswick, knocking out power to several buildings and backing up traffic for miles.
The crash happened at around 2:45 p.m. Tuesday. Witnesses tell News 12 New Jersey that a car was traveling very fast off the Route 1 southbound ramp to Route 18 and crashed into a utility pole. A power transformer that was attached to that pole then came crashing down.
Along with the transformer came power wires, which set the asphalt on fire. A school bus was also parked near the area, and those wires fell on top of the bus.
Cellphone video of the accident shows a large fireball erupting from the transformer when it crashed to the ground. No one inside the school bus was hurt. The driver of the car also was not injured.
The crash knocked out power to several buildings in the area, including the Rose Mountain care center and Raritan Garden Apartments. News 12 New Jersey is told the patients inside the care center are being taken care of.
PSEG crews repaired the pole and installed a new transformer. The power was back on at the buildings affected by the accident.
Traffic in the area of Route 1 South and Route 18 was backed up for several miles after the accident.
