The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey says it is testing out an autonomous street sweeper system.
They say the new sweepers would run strictly on battery power and can pick up 3,000 pounds of debris from roadways.
The sweeper – developed by Trombia -- will be used around Port Newark to clean streets and the interior or warehouses.
"We really are looking at automation across the board to understand how we can do much more with the same amount of resources we currently have,” said Port Authority of New York and New Jersey representative Seth Wainer. “So how can we have a cleaner environment, how can we help people get from point a to point b faster and quicker."
If the test run is successful, the sweepers could be seen at local airports in the near future.
