A Sussex County woman is facing charges after allegedly running over cats on purpose while driving around with her son.
Vasfije Cain appeared to brag about the act on Facebook. News 12 New Jersey was sent screenshots of Cain’s Facebook page that show a photo of her riding in a car with someone she says is her son.
The post says, “As he drives mom around and runs over three cats, maybe people should keep their cats at their house and not on the street. So proud of him eliminating the cat population."
Cain’s Facebook page now appears to have been taken down.
Police say that the incident happened Aug. 22 on Flora Avenue in Hopatcong. Cain was charged with hitting a domestic animal and failing to report it.
Hopatcong residents tell News 12 that they are appalled by the alleged acts.
“You’ve got to be a pretty sick person, you know? To hurt any animal, any living being,” said Timothy Hannon.
“She should be in jail for doing something like that. Nobody should hurt an animal. They're innocent,” said Pam Wootton.
Neither the Hopatcong Police Department nor Animal Control wished to discuss the incident further with News 12.
News 12 also reached out to Cain for comment, but she did not return calls.
Cain is expected to appear in court Sept. 24.
