Newark police are asking for the public’s help identifying who stole a brand-new trailer used by a church to feed the hungry.
The incident happened around 10:30 p.m. Sunday at Temple Rock Community Church, which prides itself on helping those in need. The theft was caught on video.
Police say someone who knew the trailer's location broke into it in the parking lot and drove off with it.
Temple Rock Church is located along an industrial portion of Broadway in Newark. The church normally has security on the doors and gates, along with surveillance cameras.
Newark police say that the suspect cut through the lock on the gate and drove straight toward the back of the parking lot and the trailer. The driver can be seen backing up to the trailer, attaching it to the hitch and then driving off.
Police believe the vehicle used to tow the trailer is a Cadillac SRX.
Church Pastor Pablo Pizarro is putting out a plea for help. He wrote on social media, “NEWARK, NJ YOU HAVE TO DO BETTER. It's a church!!!!”
The pastor went on to write, "It's unfortunate how nothing is sacred anymore. Sunday evening our church trailer was stolen. This is a brand-new trailer that we used to haul food for the community weekly."
Newark police say that the registration number for the trailer is TXY97X.
Anyone who may have additional information is asked to contact the police at 1-877-NWK-TIPS.
