Police standoff evacuates Brick neighborhood

A police standoff in a Brick Township neighborhood Monday evacuated homes on Van Ness Drive. Authorities say the suspect, 28-year-old Richard Stanek, shot and critically injured 54-year-old Kevin Kreiss.

A police standoff in a Brick Township neighborhood Monday evacuated homes on Van Ness Drive.
Authorities say the suspect, 28-year-old Richard Stanek, shot and critically injured 54-year-old Kevin Kreiss. According to police, Kreiss lives at the Van Ness home with his girlfriend and her son, Stanek. The girlfriend was not home at the time of the shooting, police say.
Police evacuated houses surrounding the home Stanek locked himself in. Authorities say they briefly lost contact with Stanek, but are now in communication with him. They expect the standoff to be resolved peacefully.
Meanwhile, Kreiss was airlifted to Jersey Shore University Medical Center, where he remains in critical condition with gunshot wounds to his chest and back.
