Police say an armed man broke into a home and barricaded himself for hours in Linden before being apprehended Sunday.
Authorities say the standoff stemmed from an earlier incident about five minutes away at a ShopRite on West Edgar Road.
Police say the suspect assaulted an elderly man, possibly robbing him, before taking off in the victim’s car and leading officers on a chase.
Lt. Christopher Guenther, of the Linden police, said that at some point, the suspect lost control near Park Avenue and crashed.
Police say the suspect attempted to carjack another vehicle, but failed.
They say he took off on foot, broke into the basement of a  South Park Avenue home – while a mother and son were eating their breakfast.
The family evacuated the home in their pajamas once they saw the surveillance video of the stranger hiding out in their basement.
Neighbor Kristi DePalma said she was looking out her back door and started recording.

"They all rushed in and then they came out with him handcuffed…He was missing his pants. His pants were down. His pants were off, boxers were off,” she says.

Charges in the case are pending.
