Police: Queens man fraudulently altered and deposited check intended for the IRS
Officials say that on Jan. 28, a person reported to police that a check they mailed had been stolen and the payee information had been altered.

A 19-year-old Queens man is accused of check fraud, Norwalk police say.
Officials say that on Jan. 28, a person reported to police that a check they mailed had been stolen and the payee information had been altered.
Detectives later determined that a $53,401 check intended for the Internal Revenue Service had been intercepted, fraudulently altered and deposited into Ashton Artis' bank account.
NYPD officers took Artis into custody on July 20 and transported him to Rikers Island Correctional Facility. Norwalk detectives traveled to the facility on Monday and extradited Artis back to Connecticut.
Artis has been charged with larceny and forgery.
His bond was set at $50,000. He is scheduled to appear in court Aug. 17
