A Norwalk man faces charges for having an AR-15 assault rifle without a permit, police say.

Police responded to 97 Richards Ave. just before 6:15 p.m. Thursday for a suspicious person complaint. They were told Lance Jones was sleeping in the rear stairwell of the building. Police say Jones does live at that address.

When officers met Jones, he initially provided them with a false name.

They then learned he had an AR-15 assault rifle loaded with a 60-round magazine inside his backpack. Police say Jones does not have a firearms permit.

Jones was charged with possession of an assault weapon, possession of a large capacity magazine, carrying a pistol without a permit and interfering with an officer.

He is expected to appear in court May 15.
