West New York residents endured some tense moments Wednesday due to a hostage situation and homicide investigation.
Police were called to a home on 67th Street after a tip that a man was murdered Tuesday night. When they arrived, they say 51-year-old Jose Alvarez was locked inside with two hostages. Authorities negotiated for four hours and were able to get both hostages out safely.
Alvarez was eventually brought out on a stretcher in handcuffs. The Hudson County prosecutor says Alvarez was under the influence of drugs and alcohol during the situation. He was found passed out inside the house with a handgun by his side, say investigators.
Police say they did find a body in the basement of the home. Alvarez will be charged with murder.
