Police: Man, 3 kids killed in crash were not wearing seatbelts; car was modified for racing
Police in Gloucester County say a man and three young family members were not wearing seatbelts when they were killed in a crash over the weekend.
The crash happened on July 31 just before 9:30 p.m. on Gateway Boulevard in Westville, right in front of Pellegrino Chevrolet Dealership.
Police have identified the driver as 34-year-old George Ritter, who was ejected from the 1987 Ford Mustang. Officials say that the car was “modified with specialized tires and engine accessories to include a roll cage to make the vehicle specially designed to race at private racetracks.”
Responding officers found the three girls, ages 9, 8 and 5, inside the car after the crash. Police say two of the victims were Ritter's daughters and the third was his niece.
All four victims were pronounced dead at the scene. They had attended a children’s party at the Westville Power Boat Club prior to the crash.
Police say that they are investigating if speed was a factor in the crash. They are also awaiting toxicology results on Ritter.
A GoFundMe set up for the victims' families has raised thousands of dollars
