Officers responding to a stabbing shot and killed an armed man inside a Brooklyn synagogue, according to police.
According to investigators, 49-year-old Calvin Peters, of Valley Stream, stabbed 22-year-old Israeli student Levi Rosenblat in the head. The stabbing happened at the Chabad Lubavitch World Headquarters in Crown Heights at around 1:45 a.m. Tuesday.
When confronted by officers, Peters allegedly lunged at them, leading one officer to shoot him in the chest. The entire incident was caught on cellphone video obtained by News 12.
Peters was taken to Kings County Hospital, where he was pronounced dead on arrival. Rosenblat was taken to Bellevue Hospital and is in critical condition.
The NYPD held a brief press conference to address the shooting, saying Peters was known to police and had a history of being emotionally disturbed. They believe that it was an isolated incident.
A person who witnessed the incident says Peters did not seem mentally sound. "He was saying he wanted to die tonight. He sounded like he was really high on drugs or just psycho," the witness says.
A knife was recovered at the scene.
The district attorney says authorities are investigating into whether the attack was a hate crime.
The synagogue also says it will be increasing security.
