A Jersey City man is facing charges for allegedly striking a pedestrian with his car while driving on the sidewalk after fleeing a previous crash.
Hudson County prosecutors say that Oscar Moran, 66, was intoxicated when he struck a 56-year-old Brooklyn man walking along a sidewalk near First and Hudson streets in Hoboken Tuesday afternoon.
Police say that Moran was fleeing the scene of a crash moments earlier on First and Bloomfield streets.
Luis Salgado told News 12 New Jersey that Moran crashed into his car while driving fast. He said that he felt lucky to be alive with only minor injuries.
Police say that after Moran crashed into Salgado, he drove a few blocks away on the sidewalk, struck the pedestrian, and then crashed into a building right near the Hoboken Police Station. He was still inside of the vehicle when police officers came out to arrest him, according to officials.
Hoboken residents say that they are shocked by the incident, especially since Hoboken is a city where many get around by walking.
“It should not be done and I hope that person learns from the mistake,” says Hoboken resident Chandler Johnson.
Moran was charged with DWI and second- and third-degree assault by auto.
The pedestrian is expected to recover from his injuries.
