An Ocean County man is facing animal cruelty charges after his dog died after it was allegedly left outside in the sweltering heat.

Brick police responded to Jonathan Correa's home shortly before 6 p.m. Sunday after neighbors reported the female "Cane Corso-type" dog was unconscious and in severe distress. Temperatures at the time were around 100 degrees.

The officers tried to cool down the dog and took it to an animal hospital, but it died there Tuesday morning.

Correa, 29, was charged with failing to provide necessary care to an animal or living creature, exposing it to adverse weather conditions, failing to provide a shelter of the proper size and failing to obtain a dog license. He was released on a summons pending a court date.

It wasn't immediately known if Correa retained an attorney.
