Suffolk County police said they found the body in the woods off Connecticut Avenue between River Road and S. River Road around 3 p.m. Wednesday.
Detectives believe the cause of death to be criminal in nature.
Officials have not yet identified the body.
Suffolk County and Riverhead police have been out in the area searching for Kathleen Trent, 63, since Jan. 29. Her son reported her missing after not seeing or hearing from her since the evening of Jan. 27, two days prior.
Trent was last seen at her home in Riverhead, about 6 miles from where this body was found in the Manorville woods off Connecticut Avenue and S River Road.
Investigators described Trent as 5 feet, 2 inches tall with blonde hair and blue eyes.
People who live in Trent's neighborhood in Riverhead say it's heartbreaking to hear she's missing.
"It's unsettling right now. Everyone's concerned," says neighbor John Tuthill. "I hope she's safe forever she is and I hope she's found. If anything, it's going to bring some comfort back to the community."
"She's a nice woman. I used to see her every day and just say hi how are you,'" says neighbor Giedrius.
Police said the Suffolk County Medical Examiner's Office is working to identify the body and determine the exact cause of her death.
