A 71-year-old woman was found dead Thursday after a house fire in Waretown that authorities later ruled accidental, officials said.

The fire was reported at about 3 p.m. April 2 on Route 9, according to a joint statement from the Ocean County Prosecutor and Ocean Township Police Department.

During a search of the home, emergency crews found the woman dead in a first-floor bedroom, authorities said.

Investigators determined the fire started on the floor of that bedroom and was accidental, caused by smoking, officials said.
