A fatal car accident shut down a portion of Route 17 in Paramus for hours Saturday morning, police say.

They called it a pedestrian fatality, though it is unknown why the person was on the busy highway. There was no word on the pedestrian's identity either.

It happened before 6:30 a.m., casing both the north and southbound portions of Route 17 to close between Lindwood and Ridgewood avenues.

Both portions of the highway have since reopened to traffic.
