(AP) - A potential bomb threat that shutdown part of the New Jersey Turnpike has been found not to becredible, New Jersey State Police said.
State police spokesman Sgt. Stephen Jones said troopers took a27-year-old Massachusetts man into custody following a car stoparound 6:15 p.m. Tuesday in the southbound lanes of the turnpike inWoodbury Heights about six miles south of Exit 3.
Jones said state police stopped the car after receiving a tipfrom federal authorities that the driver might be armed anddangerous, and possibly carrying a bomb. Jones said the originaltip came from a member of the man's family.
"Indications are this was erroneous information, albeitcredible-sounding information, and at this point it seems toindicate that this was not a legitimate threat," Jones said.
State police initially shut down a 30-mile stretch of theturnpike in both directions from Exit 4 in Mount Laurel to itssouthern terminus near the Delaware Memorial Bridge. By 9:45 p.m.,all northbound lanes had been reopened, and southbound lanes fromExit 4 to Exit 2 in Woolwich were expected to reopen within ahalf-hour, state police said.
Jones said investigators would complete inspection of thevehicle before fully reopening the roadway. He said FBI agents werequestioning the man - who was not charged - at the state policestation in Moorestown.
