(08/03/07) TRENTON ? Police arrested Rider University?s dean of students, the director of Greek life and three other fraternity members Friday in the binge drinking death of a freshman student.
Freshman Gary DeVercelly had a blood alcohol content of .426 when he died on March 30 after a night of drinking at the Kappa Tau fraternity house on the Lawrence Township campus. Police were called to the house early on March 29 due to reports of a student vomiting from drinking alcohol.
DeVercelly was later taken to Capital Health System?s Fuld Campus in Trenton. He eventually died after being treated in the ICU. DeVercelly, from Long Beach, California, was just 18 years old.
Another freshman, William Williams, was treated for alcohol poisoning at Fuld and released.
The five officials and fraternity members charged were:- Ada Badgley, 31, of Lawrenceville, the university's director of Greek Life.- Anthony Campbell, 51, of Lawrenceville, the dean of students.- Adriano DiDonato, 22, of Princeton, residence director and house master of the Phi Kappa Tau fraternity house.- Dominic Olsen, 21, of Kenilworth, pledge master of Spring 2007 Phi Kappa Tau pledge class.- Michael J. Tourney, 21, of Randolph, the fraternity chapter president.
In a statement, prosecutors said the five were charged becausethey "knowingly or recklessly organized, promoted, facilitated orengaged in conduct" that injured DeVercelly, as well as the other freshman who was hospitalized.
If convicted, the officials and fraternity members chargedFriday would face a maximum penalty of 18 months in prison and afine of up to $10,000.
In response to DeVercelly's death, Rider University implementednew policies to curb campus drinking, including banning alcohol atfraternity parties.
