New Jersey drivers are constantly sharing the road with heavy trucks, and state police are out making sure rigs aren?t carrying extra weight.
Police say the legal weight limit for an 18-wheeler is 80,000 pounds. If a truck company wants to carry more than that, they have to get a special permit. In 2004, 11,200 permits were handed out. Last year, that number rose to more than 15,000.
Some drivers say they have to obtain special permits in every state, which can cost them thousands of dollars.
Trucks that don?t make the legal limit get fined.
State police ticketed approximately 1,400 trucks for being overweight last year. The state also pulled in $1.6 million last year for issuing special permits.
