A Jersey Shore town will prohibit the sale of medical and recreational marijuana in the new year.
The Point Pleasant Beach Borough Council passed an ordinance last week that bans businesses from selling marijuana within a quarter-mile of schools, churches, residential areas and certain business districts. The restrictions make the entire borough off limits to marijuana businesses
"We're trying to promote a family-friendly, fun town. And so it's just not a fit for us. Any kind of dispensary in our town is just not a good fit,” says Mayor Stephen Reid. “We're a 1-square-mile town. And people come here with their families to make memories. And that's the way I want to keep it."
Recreational marijuana is not legal in New Jersey, but Gov.-elect Phil Murphy has said that he would like to see it happen during his term.
Some towns in other states that have legalized recreational marijuana have similar ordinances. In Colorado, 176 of the state’s 272 municipalities do not allow marijuana sales.
