Four fishermen are lucky to be alive after they were rescued off the coast of Middlesex County Friday morning.
Three of the men - 34-year-old Gabriel Martinez, of New Brunswick; 20-year-old Dennis Galdames, of Plainfield; and 31-year-old Elvin Serrano, of Plainfield - were treated on the scene and released.
However, 20-year-old Frederico Mendoza, of Plainfield, got caught in the rough waters while on the raft and began drifting away. He is listed in fair condition at Raritan Bay Medical Center.
The four men started fishing at around 7 p.m. Thursday night on the Old Bridge Township side of Cheesequake Creek, just off Route 35.
Sources tell News 12 New Jersey that one of the men was on a boat fishing and needed help. The other three men came to try to help him, resulting in all four men needing rescue.
Emergency responders say cold rain and high winds made the rescue more challenging.
