Mercer County is starting a stricter enforcement of its recycling policy, meaning if a bin contains any contaminants it will be tagged with a red "Recycling Rejection Notice" and won’t be collected.
According to the county, receiving the tag means a resident has gone against the Mercer County Improvement Authority's recycling contamination policy.
Residents who have had a bin tagged would have to bring the bin back in, remove the "contaminants" and put it back out on the next scheduled recycling day.
Some of the contaminants include pizza boxes, plastic bags, Styrofoam, drinking glasses, aerosol cans, paper plates and towels.
Items that can be recycled include paper, cardboard, books, bottles, cans, juice boxes and detergent bottles.
The county says the new system will be phased in parts of Hamilton Township over the next few scheduled recycling pickups.
