People in parts of Somerset County may be seeing pink water flowing out of the faucet.
However, New Jersey American Water assures there’s no health risk to homeowners.
New Jersey American Water says that the pink water is due to higher levels of sodium permanganate being used at the Raritan Millstone Water Treatment plant.
The sodium treatment is necessary to remove contaminants and ensure there are no unpleasant odors or taste to the water.
The utility released a statement saying,
“Though there is no impact to drinking water quality and the water meets drinking water standards, you may wish to refrain from doing laundry during this time.
In an effort to help clear the system, we will be flushing hydrants which may result in low pressure and/or discoloration for some customers.”
The utility has warned that it’s possible that laundry could be discolored.
To remedy the situation, the utility suggests turning on the cold water for three to five minutes until it runs clear.
Townships that could affected by this include,
Bound Brook, Bridgewater, Manville, Hillsborough, Somerville, Raritan Borough, Dunellen, Piscataway, and Plainfield.
