A Jersey City dog named Mac, who went missing under the care of a sitter, was found dead Wednesday night.
The sitter allegedly told Mac's owner, Diego Chaves, that Mac ran away while in her care. The sitter disappeared, then stopped responding, according to Chaves.
Chaves says he later found red flags and other horror stories on social media.
Unfortunately, heartbreaking stories like Mac's are common and leave many owners wondering who they can trust.
"It's frightening and disheartening knowing there could be scams out there - but it makes you want to vet more, like a babysitter," said Jaclyn Lima of Hoboken.
Jessica Abernathy, president of the National Association of Professional Pet Sitters, says pet parents should do their homework.
Dog owners can find professional sitters on apps -- it's advised to look beyond online reviews.
There will be a vigil for Mac at Church Square Park Friday night, along with a pet toy drive for local shelters.
