Perth Amboy will be the next New Jersey town to provide municipal identification cards for its residents.
The cards will include information such as name, birthdate and address, as well as a photo. It would be available to people who are not eligible for a driver's license or a passport.
Perth Amboy Mayor Wilda Diaz says that the cards will help bring a bigger sense of belonging to the city's large immigrant population.
"If you have to go to the doctor, sometimes you have to show ID. At the pharmacist, they will ask for an ID. This is also about wellness and to be identified if shopping in certain areas in the city," the mayor says.
Mayor Diaz says that she would like to be able to issue the ID cards by January.
