Lawmakers in Paterson are considering deputizing the town's officers as fashion police.
Paterson Councilman Anthony Davis is pushing an ordinance that would ban baggy pants. If passed, the ordinance would allow police to issue tickets to men and women with visible underwear.
"It's a jail mentality," says Davis. "It's not right, it's disrespectful."
Other communities in the Garden State have mulled similar plans to little avail. A Trenton councilwoman pushed the idea last year without gaining much support. A baggy pants ordinance was also introduced in Irvington but withdrawn over legal concerns.
The ordinance has hit at least one speed bump already though.
"Until we define who defines indecent exposure, we're waiting for the legal opinion," says Mayor Joey Torres. "Then the council will deliberate it further."
