An amputee from Paterson won his battle Wednesday against the city for a chance to train with the fire department.
Despite Isaac Feliciano?s amputated leg, he passed the written firefighters exam and finished 103rd out of more than 600 applicants in the physical tests. However, a city medical consultant ruled Feliciano wasn?t physically capable of serving in the fire department. After appealing that ruling, a state panel ruled in favor of Feliciano. The city must now allow him to train.
?The hiring of Mr. Feliciano would be a testament to his persistence and dedication, and a realization of a lifelong dream to serve the city of Paterson,? said Paterson Fire Chief Scott MacGilvrey.
Feliciano says he has wanted to become a firefighter since the age of 4 when he was rescued from a burning building by a firefighter. The Paterson Fire Department is working with other towns to find the next available fire academy for Feliciano to attend.
