Passaic County has teamed with Google to offer a new way to explain the outdoors.
Google Street View will soon be available on all 2,000 miles of the county’s hiking trails.
County officials say that this will allow hikers to see what a trail looks like from their computer of smartphone before they venture out. They also say that it is a safety feature should anyone get lost, they would be able to see where they are to let rescuers know.
Freehold Assad Akhter says that Google donated the camera and that the trails will be mapped out by a Passaic County employee.
“We’ve dedicated one employee to walk the trails with a helmet-mounted camera, and those pictures will get uploaded to Google,” he says.
Some of the trails are already available online, and Akhter says that the mapping should be complete by the end of the summer.
