After the beating of an unarmed man by a Passaic police officer was caught on tape last month, the city?s new mayor is making changes to the way the police force is run.
Mayor Alex Blanco wants to hire a civilian director to run the police department. The director would handle policy matters while the police chief handles day-to-day operations.
The New Jersey State Police Benevolent Association says it?s generally against bringing in civilian police directors because they may not have the experience needed to run the department.
