Passaic city officials have begun charging the disabled for handicap parking.

Many are upset over the move. Wanda Walis tells News 12 New Jersey she became disabled when she was hit by a car while working as a crossing guard 25 years ago. She says she was stunned when she learned she'd be charged $50 a year for a personal handicapped space or she'd lose her parking privilege.

City officials say they expect to raise about $10,000 through the new fees and admit it's a drop in the bucket when you consider Passaic's budget stands at $82 million.

City Council President Gary Schaer says they imposed the fee to defray the $650 cost of installing handicapped parking signs. Mayor Alex Blanco says they're considering additional parking meters throughout the city to raise desperately needed revenue.
