Toms River police say a group of young adults, mostly in their 20s, was gathered for a birthday celebration when the house they were sleeping in became engulfed in flames.
All eighteen people sleeping inside were able to escape, with some leaping from windows or balconies.
Nine people were treated at a hospital for smoke inhalation and one young man was taken to a burn unit. Firefighters believe the fire started on a side porch, but the cause is under investigation.
