A parking garage in danger of collapsing on Summit Avenue in Hackensack has been shut down.
Officials closed the parking deck after finding major structural problems. The move comes a year and a half after a parking garage in Hackensack collapsed, forcing people out of their apartments for months.
Days after the collapse the city began requesting engineering reports of more than 60 commercial buildings to prevent another incident.
However, the company that manages the Summit Avenue building did not comply right away. It initially gave officials only an architect's report that said the building needed minor, mostly cosmetic changes. It wasn't until officials issued summonses that the managers produced a structural engineer's report that revealed years of neglect.
It was later discovered that the parking deck at 5 Summit Ave. had major structural issues. The deck supports a two-story office building. Repair work is now under way at the parking garage.
