The Parking Authority of Passaic is considering several changes to boost revenue.
Authority members are proposing adding parking meters near the community college campus, extending paid parking hours by two hours and eliminating free parking on Sunday.
The changes are being proposed to fill a budget hole, but have local drivers fuming. Drivers call feeding the meters a hassle and financial drain and say they welcome the break on Sundays.
The mayor of Passaic is also against the proposed parking changes. Instead, he wants the parking authority to consider changing the parking rates. Currently, a quarter buys 20 minutes. The mayor suggests changing that to 15 minutes.
The Passaic City Council has final say on any parking changes. The council plans to discuss all of the options at its Feb. 23 meeting, where it will also seek input from citizens.
