Parents in Roxbury are concerned over the location of a new school bus stop because they believe it will put their kids in danger.
The new stop will be located on the corner of Berkshire Valley Road and Gordon Road, very close to a firehouse and to Route 80. Parents fear that fire trucks speeding by will be hazardous to their kids? safety.
?This is a place for emergencies,? Patricia Johnson, a mother, says. ?Not a place for children.? Johnson doesn?t want her kids to wait for the bus when she knows the firehouse is so close by.
Johnson and her neighbors discovered another reason to worry a few days ago when a tour bus overturned on nearby Route 80 ? and rolled onto Berkshire Valley Road. ?Kids shouldn?t be in danger,? parent Louise Donegan says. ?God forbid one of them got hurt.?
Residents are also concerned because they say the area where the bus stop is, is supposed to be a blind spot, with cars whizzing around the corner a lot of the time. Parents fear oncoming traffic may not have time to see the kids walking to the stop.
Roxbury parents are in the process of trying to get the bus stop changed before classes start. The town?s school superintendent, Dr. Michael Rossi, couldn't be reached for comment - but parents say he approved the location of this bus stop at the last school board meeting.
