Some parents are questioning a school?s decision to hold classes Friday after a student was diagnosed with a staph infection.

A teen at Point Pleasant Borough High School has a confirmed case of MRSA, a penicillin-resistant bacterial infection. Doctors say the teen is responding to medication and is recovering at home.

The superintendent of schools says a germicide was sprayed throughout the school building as a precaution. Some parents picked their children up from school early after hearing about the staph infection. Many don?t believe a school can be sanitized overnight. They are especially concerned after an invasive form of the disease killed a 17-year-old in Virginia.

The school?s nurse says the bacteria is common. She urges parents to be aware of what the infection looks like, usually a rash that is puss-filled. Health officials say hand-washing with soap and water is said to be the best way to prevent a staph infection.
