Patients may be allowed to walk into the emergency room at Jersey City Medical Center Friday, but they won?t be treated.

According to a spokesperson from the state Department of Health and Senior Services, the hospital's certification from the American College of Surgeons expired on June 20. The spokesperson is not sure why the hospital allowed it to expire or when the ER will begin treating patients again.

Ambulances are still being dispatched, but patients will not be brought to the medical center. Those patients who go to the ER will be taken to another hospital. Emergency Department Chairman Neal Shipley has revealed to News 12 New Jersey that the hospital did in fact take care of a trauma patient in the emergency room overnight. A spokesperson for Health and Senior Services says the department is looking into the legality of that treatment.
