A new bill will try and save the lives of young athletes with heart issues after a 12-year-old died in February during football practice.
Rep. Frank Pallone unveiled the HEARTS Act on Tuesday. The bill comes on the heels of the death of Elijah Jordan Brown-Garcia who collapsed during practice at West Side Park football field in Newark.
The HEARTS Act is designed to provide parents, schools and health professionals with more information to increase awareness and preparation for cardiac events.
"Basically, what the HEARTS Act does is encourages schools to be aware and be prepared for a cardiac emergency and prompt families to evaluate their cardiac history, check for symptoms and seek medical screening, if necessary,” Pallone said.
This bill calls for placement guidelines of lifesaving defibrillators at schools, as well as updated CPR training.
