Families in Suffolk spent their Friday Juneteenth holiday getting an up‑close look at horses and hands‑on farm fun during The Mane Event: Year of the Horse Celebration at Pal‑O‑Mine Equestrian’s 13‑acre campus in Islandia.

The four‑hour event invited visitors to meet the nonprofit’s 25 horses, take part in educational stations, enjoy horse‑themed art projects and learn about the role the animals play in equine‑assisted therapy. The afternoon also featured a horseback roping demonstration, a parade of horse breeds, children’s obstacle courses, games and local vendors.

Lisa A. Gatti, founder and CEO of Pal‑O‑Mine Equestrian, said the celebration helps introduce the community to the horses that support the organization’s therapeutic programs for children and adults with disabilities, veterans, and people experiencing mental health challenges.

“Horses really are the motivating force behind equine‑assisted therapy,” Gatti said. “They are majestic, they live in the moment, they are present — they are game‑changers for behaviors.”

The nonprofit says events like The Mane Event strengthen community connection and highlight the special bond between people and horses.
